Hotel Migration

A project of Bürger.Courage

Bürger.Courage is a citizen`s initiative of people living in Dresden aiming to fight racism and promote tolerance and democracy in the region. Bürger.Courage has about fifty members whose commitment is entirely voluntary. The initiative was founded in 2005 and since then has established a rich network of local artists, partners in the city's institutions, and interested citizens. Projects of Bürger.Courage usually link advocacy work with information campaigns and art installations or theater work. To learn more about Bürger.Courage's past projects, please consult our website (www.buerger-courage.de – unfortunately in German only).

“Hotel Migration” is an interactive exhibition on migration. Migration and border crossing mobility in these days constitute a substantial part of life in a globalized world. Nevertheless, xenophobia and mistrust against people from other cultures still prevail among many citizens of Dresden. Bürger.Courage believes that part of this attitude is due to a lack of knowledge about migration, about the reasons why people come to Dresden and about the way people with different cultural backgrounds live in Dresden. The project “Hotel Migration” thus aims at filling this information gap and shows that migration is an asset –   not a problem. Besides promoting a positive understanding of migration the exhibition will also point out the difficulties many people face while migrating and living in diaspora. The exhibition will thus also touch upon issues such as the German and European immigration law, discrimination and intercultural problems.

To show the many faces of migration, the project tries to document the lives and tell the stories of people with very different migration experiences: refugees, people living in bi-national relationships, students, professionals, people living transnational lives with several places they call home, people whose parents migrated and people who were born in Dresden but decided to move to another country.

Come and visit us at St. Petersburger Straße 18b. The exhibition is open Mondays to Fridays from 2pm-8pm and weekends from 12pm-6pm.
